Museum opened in 1992 with the support of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Council, in the spirit of promoting and protecting the heritage of Provence. This monographic museum presents a series of works by Provençal painter Auguste Chabaud, born in Nimes in 1882 and resident of Graveson until his death in 1955.
Friend of Matisse and Derain at the beginning of the century, Auguste Chabaud is a pioneer of contemporary painting. But it is alone, in his native Provence, that Chabaud chose to draw scenes of daily life in Graveson as well as the landscapes of Provence, one of which he immortalizes – the Montagnette. His style which swings back and forth from Fauvism to Expressionism is unique and makes him different from the other French painters of his generation.
The Auguste Chabaud Regional Museum has a permanent collection of works by this great artist. The Parisian nightlife of the early century, the peace and tranquility of the Montagnette and the daily life of Provençal villages mingle to form a collection full of life, strength and visual intensity. Each year, the Auguste Chabaud Regional Museum organizes temporary exhibitions, lectures and musical evenings.
Guided tours for groups, educational activities to bridge the gap between schools and the world of museums, fine arts workshops for children and adults as well as summer courses are a sample of what the Auguste Chabaud Regional Museum offers year-round.
